The Week Ahead: Sept. 1-3

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University athletic teams open the 2017-18 academic year with a plethora of events over the Labor Day weekend.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Opponent: Lawrence vs. St. Norbert College

When and Where: Friday, Sept. 1, 9 a.m., Lawrence Courts.

Opponent: Lawrence vs. UW-La Crosse

When and Where: Friday, Sept. 1, 9 a.m., Lawrence Courts.

Fast Fact: The Vikings' lineup will shift in 2017 as top singles player Katie Frankel was lost to graduation. Lindsay Holsen slides into the top spot in the lineup after compiling a 12-10 record at No. 2 last season.

MEN'S SOCCER

Opponent: Lawrence vs. Lakeland University

When and Where: Friday, Sept. 1, 5 p.m., Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

Series Record: In a series that goes back to Lawrence's first season of soccer, 1974, the Vikings hold a 16-8-2 advantage over the Muskies. Lawrence has won the last two meetings.

When and Where: Sunday, Sept. 3, 1 p.m., Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

Series Record: In a series that started in 1983, Marian holds a 10-7-1 advantage. The teams last met in 2015, and Marian posted a 4-2 victory.

Fast Fact: It's a fresh start for the Vikings, who said farewell to 11 seniors following the 2016 season. Head coach Will Greer also returns after serving in an interim capacity for most of the 2016 season. Greer was busy on the recruiting trail as he welcomes 10 new faces to the roster.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Opponent: Lawrence vs. Saint Mary's (Minn.) University

When and Where: Friday, Sept. 1, 7 p.m., Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

Series Record: This is the third meeting between the teams and it's all even at 1-1-0. Saint Mary's won the first meeting 3-0 back in 2007, and the Vikings defeated Saint Mary's 2-1 in 2012.

Fast Fact: Improved depth should help the Vikings in 2017. The Vikings had limited numbers and were decimated by injuries last season. Look for key players Ryan Berkley and Mari Hubanks to lead Lawrence this season as the Vikings hope to bounce back from a tough 2016 campaign.

Series Record: This is the first meeting between the teams.

Fast Fact: The Vikings hit the road to hard-hit Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Lawrence faces four tough opponents, but the Vikings return a squad picked to finish third in the Midwest Conference. All-Midwest Conference performers Arianna Neumeyer and Cyra Bammer will pace the Vikings' offense and defense.

CROSS COUNTRY

Event: Tom Barry Invitational

When and Where: Saturday, Sept. 2, 11 a.m., Colburn Park, Green Bay, Wis.

Fast Fact: Lawrence opens its season just north on Interstate 41 to compete in St. Norbert's meet. Junior standout Josh Janusiak looks to keep the rest of the field in his wake as he attempts to follow up on a spectacular 2016 campaign. Janusiak was a runaway winner of last year's Midwest Conference cross country title, and sophomore Joe Kortenhof provides Janusiak with a stellar running mate.

FOOTBALL

Opponent: Lawrence vs. Presentation College

When and Where: Saturday, Sept. 2, 1 p.m., Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

Series Record: This is the second meeting between the teams. Presentation hung on for a 17-10 victory over the Vikings in 2016 in Aberdeen, S.D.

Fast Fact: Lawrence opens the 2017 campaign, the third for head coach Rob McCarthy, with a solid nucleus on both offense and defense. Perhaps the strongest part of the squad are the linebackers and secondary as Lawrence returns All-Midwest Conference linebacker Jake Gostisha and all-conference cornerback Terrell Myers, one of just three freshman named to the squad.
