The Week Ahead: February 19-25

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University is set to compete in a pair of league championships this weekend. The Lawrence track and field teams head to Ripon College for the Midwest Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday with its distance contingent leading the way. The Lawrence fencing teams compete in the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday and Sunday.

TRACK AND FIELD

Event: Midwest Conference Championships

When and Where: Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24, Willmore Center, Ripon, Wis.

Fast Fact: Lawrence's Josh Janusiak and Joe Kortenhof have established themselves as the top two distance runners in the Midwest Conference during the indoor season. Janusiak and Kortenhof own the top two times in the league in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Janusiak broke his own school record in the 3,000 with a time of 8:40.31, and Kortenhof was right on his heels at 8:40.82. In the 5,000, Janusiak broke the school record with a time of 14:58.86, and Kortenhof also broke the 15-minute mark with a time of 14:59.97.

MEN'S TENNIS (2-1)

When and Where: Saturday, Feb. 24, noon, Eau Claire YMCA, Eau Claire, Wis.

Series Record: Lawrence leads the all-time series with Dubuque 2-1.

Opponent: Lawrence at UW-Eau Claire (6-1)

When and Where: Saturday, Feb. 24, 3 p.m., Eau Claire YMCA, Eau Claire, Wis.

Series Record: In a series that started in 1977, Eau Claire holds a 10-2 advantage over Lawrence.

Fast Fact: Lawrence picked up a 5-4 victory in its only action last week, and Connor Maloney delivered the winning point when he won a marathon second-set tiebreaker 13-11 to win his match at No. 2 singles. Maloney improved to 2-1 during the spring season.

Series Record: Lawrence has won both meetings with the Tigers with the Vikings winning 8-7 in 1995 and 6-5 in 1998.

Fast Fact: Lawrence opens its season in southern Illinois with a four-game set with Iowa Wesleyan. Lawrence has a strong group of seniors, led by infielder/pitcher Matt Holliday. Holliday is looking to become the first player since Joe Krueger (1988-91) to be a four-time All-Midwest Conference selection. Holliday enters the season with 139 hits, just 17 shy of breaking Jake Gordon's career record, and he needs only three doubles to break Andrew Wong's career record.

FENCING

Fast Fact: Lawrence returns its top two fencers from a season ago when Nathan Schlesinger took sixth in foil and Joe Davis placed sixth in sabre. The Vikings finished third in the combined team standings in 2017 with both the men's and women's teams placing fifth.
