The Week Ahead: August 27-September 2

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence athletic teams kick off the fall season this week as everyone is in action. The fall season gets going on Friday with women's tennis, and the highlight of the home events is the football opener on Saturday on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

When and Where: Friday, Aug. 31, 1 p.m., Lawrence Courts

Series Record: In a series that started in 2000, La Crosse has a 9-0 edge over the Vikings.

Opponent: Lawrence at MSOE

When and Where: Saturday, Sept. 1, 9 a.m., The Town Club, Milwaukee, Wis.

Series Record: In a series that started in 1999, Lawrence has an 8-1 lead over MSOE.

Opponent: Lawrence vs. Loras

When and Where: Saturday, Sept. 1, noon, The Town Club, Milwaukee, Wis.

Series Record: The teams have split the only two meetings. Lawrence won in 1989, and Loras won in 2009.

Fast Fact: Lawrence opens its season this weekend, and the Vikings need to find a replacement for Lindsay Holsen. Holsen was the team's top singles player in 2017, but the Vikings have a trio of senior to anchor the squad. Seniors Annie Harincar, El Goblirsch and Katie Nottberg are the top returning players for the Vikings.

Fast Fact: Lawrence heads to the East Coast to take on four teams at the Springfield Invitational. The Vikings lost multiple key performers to graduation, but top player Arianna Neumeyer is back for her senior season. Neumeyer has 798 career kills and 1,017 career digs and is trying to become the third player in Lawrence history to top 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. Neumeyer needs just 202 kills to get there, and would join Hall of Famer Shannon Arendt and Kelly Mulcahy on that elite list.

Series Record: Albion defeated Lawrence 3-2 in the first meeting between the teams in 2017.

Fast Fact: Lawrence is looking to turn around the close games this season. The Vikings suffered five one-goal losses in 2017.

CROSS COUNTRY

Event: Tom Barry Invitational

When and Where: Saturday, Sept. 1, 11 a.m., Colburn Park, Green Bay, Wis.

Fast Fact: Lawrence makes its traditional start to the season just up Interstate 41 at the Tom Barry Invitational. The Vikings feature two of the league top runners in senior Josh Janusiak and junior Joe Kortenhof. Janusiak is the two-time defending Midwest Conference champion, and Kortenhof was an all-conference honoree in each of his first two seasons. Look for both of these runners to challenge for the title this weekend.

When and Where: Saturday, Sept. 1, noon, Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl

Series Record: Grinnell holds a 31-28 advantage over the Vikings in a series that dates back to 1940. Lawrence posted a 53-7 victory over the Pioneers in the last meeting between the teams on Oct. 29, 2016.

Fast Fact: Lawrence has quite a few new faces this fall as 29 rookies are on the roster for 2018. The Vikings will need a few newcomers to help out on defense as Lawrence lost multiple starters to graduation. Lawrence does return standout cornerback Terrell Myers to anchor the defense, and the Vikings have nearly everyone back on offense.

Series Record: Saint Mary's holds a 2-1-0 edge over the Vikings in a series that started in 2007.

Fast Fact: This weekend marks the debut of Lawrence head coach Joe Sagar, who came to Lawrence after serving as an assistant coach at Augustana (Ill.). These are the first two games of a rigorous nonconference schedule that features three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams and two more opponents from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
