APPLETON, Wis. -- The Ripon College baseball team exploded for nine runs late in the first game Sunday, and the Red Hawks' bats never let up in a Midwest Conference doubleheader sweep of Lawrence University at Whiting Field.
Ripon took the opener 14-4 and rolled to a 16-2 victory in the nightcap.
Lawrence led 4-2 in the opener before Ripon tied it with two runs in the fifth, and the Red Hawks then scored nine times in the sixth to seal the victory. A single run in the seventh gave Ripon a 10-run cushion and ended the game after seven innings.
Randy Finger went 4-for-5, and Nick Taranto and Hector Anguinaga both had two hits and four runs batted in apiece for Ripon (4-11, 3-1 MWC). Brian Brown went the distance to pick up the win. Freshman Tony Caputa came on in relief to start the sixth and took the loss.
Freshman Patrick McDonnell blasted a two-run homer, his second of the season, to give Lawrence a 3-1 lead in the second. Another freshman, Rudy Mueller-Schrader, hit his first collegiate homer, a solo shot, to put the Vikings up 4-2 in the fourth.
In the nightcap, Ripon's bats stayed hot as the Red Hawks scored three in the first, three more in the second and nine in the third to build a 15-2 lead. The Red Hawks again won the game in seven innings.
Riley Erickson paced Ripon by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, and Cameron Gruenwald went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in three.
Matt Hecht went five innings, allowed four hits and two runs to pick up the win. Freshman Mike Brady allowed 12 hits and 12 runs in two innings and took the loss.
