Big 10th inning powers Grinnell past Lawrence

MAUSTON, Wis. -- A 14-run 10th inning Sunday led the Grinnell College baseball team to a 22-8 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at the Woodside Complex.

After Lawrence had rallied for five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie it at 8-8, Grinnell exploded in the 10th for eight hits to pull away.

Niko Takayesu went 3-for-5, scored five runs and drove in three runs for Grinnell (18-11, 11-5 MWC). Ben Binversie allowed two runs over four innings to pick up the win.

Reno Zemrak went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs for Lawrence (4-24-1, 1-11-1). Cole Erickson was 2-for-5 with a triple and drove in two runs, and Patrick McDonnell was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Kyle Duex pitched 1.1 innings of relief and took the loss.

Lawrence trailed 8-3 when Erickson led off the seventh with a single. After a hit batsman and a walk, a run scored on a wild pitch. Zemrak then delivered a two-out, two-run single to cut the lead to 8-6.

McDonnell and Andrew Lauber led off the eighth with doubles, and Erickson followed with a triple to tie the game. The Vikings were unable to push across the go-ahead run as Binversie got a strikeout, pop up and fly out.
