APPLETON, Wis. -- Patrick McDonnell blasted a pair of homers Friday, and the Lawrence University baseball team pounded out 18 hits in an 11-9 nonconference win over Lakeland University at Whiting Field.
McDonnell hit a two-run homer and a solo shot to finish 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and three runs scored. It was the first multi-homer game for the rookie catcher.
Kyle Duex pitched five-plus innings, allowed two hits, struck out six and walked four to pick up the victory.
Reno Zemrak went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs for the Vikings (5-24-1). Ethan Jones went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, and Nolan Spencer was 4-for-4 with a double for Lawrence.
The Vikings jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second, highlighted by McDonnell's two-run blast. The Vikings added a run in the third and tacked on two more in the fourth when McDonnell hit a solo homer.
Lawrence led 7-0 when the Muskies (11-20) struck for six runs in the sixth.
The Vikings countered with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Zemrak's two-run double highlighted the seventh and staked the Vikings to an 11-6 lead.
Zach Rabideau ran into trouble in the eighth as the Muskies scored three times to cut the lead to two. Lakeland got a single to start the ninth, but Rabideau retired the next three hitters to secure the win.
