APPLETON, Wis. -- The St. Norbert College baseball team held off a Lawrence University rally in the opener Friday and got a fine pitching performance in the nightcap to sweep a Midwest Conference doubleheader at Whiting Field.
St. Norbert won the first game 13-9 and took the second game 10-0.
In the opener, Lawrence trimmed St. Norbert's lead from nine runs to two before the Green Knights put the game away with four runs in the top of the ninth. St. Norbert won despite collecting only seven hits as Lawrence pitchers issued 10 walks and hit four batters.
Griffin Jack paced St. Norbert (24-8, 13-2 MWC) in the first game by going 2-for-5 with four runs batted in. Jason Malkowski allowed two runs over five innings to get the win.
Brandon Klar went 2-for-5, scored a run and drove in three runs for the Vikings (5-27-1, 1-13-1). Lawrence's Andrew Lauber went 3-for-3, scored two runs and drove in a run. Nolan Spencer and Matt Holliday also collected a pair of hits and both drove in a run for the Vikings.
Lawrence trailed 9-0 in the fourth when the Vikings scored single runs in the fourth and fifth. Lawrence then posted five runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-7 as the Vikings took advantage of two walks and two hit batsmen. Klar smacked a two-run single in the seventh, and Reno Zemrak picked up a run-scoring single in the inning.
The Green Knights stretched the lead back to 13-7 in the top of the ninth before Lawrence scored twice in the bottom half of the inning. Holliday had a run-scoring single, and Klar added a sacrifice fly before the Green Knights worked out of the jam.
In the second game, Jake McMahon tossed seven shutout innings to get the win. He allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked one. Kyle Duex allowed eight hits and eight runs over five innings and took the loss.
St. Norbert led 2-0 and then added five runs in the fourth to take command. Sean Ferraro went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to pace St. Norbert.
Klar went 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings.
