RIPON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team rolled to a big win in the nightcap Wednesday to earn a split of a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Ripon College at Francis Field.
Lawrence took the second game 13-4, and Ripon won the opener 11-7.
Lawrence (11-14, 4-4 MWC) pounded out 18 hits in the nightcap, and Patrick McDonnell went 4-for-4 with a homer and a double, drove in four runs and scored twice.
The Vikings led 2-0 after two innings when they struck for four runs in the third. McDonnell provided the key hit in the third with a two-run double. Lawrence was up 6-2 when McDonnell belted a solo homer in the fifth, and the Vikings added another run in the sixth for an 8-2 advantage.
Lawrence tacked on two more runs in the seventh courtesy of Jones' two-run double, and the Vikings picked up three more runs in the eighth.
Kyle Duex went 7.1 innings, allowing nine hits, striking out one and walking four, to pick up the win. Garrett Kaczrowski gave up 10 hits in three innings and took the loss for Ripon (7-15, 4-4).
In the opener, a huge second inning propelled Ripon to the win. Ripon scored nine runs, all unearned, in the second to grab a 10-1 lead. Keegan Johnston hit a three-run homer in the inning for the Red Hawks.
Lawrence battled back with a run in the third on Matthew Holliday's run-scoring single and two more in the fourth on Holliday's two-run single. Holliday finished 3-for-5 with a double and four runs batted in.
The Vikings sliced the lead to 11-7 with three more runs in the seventh as Zemrak picked up a two-run single. That was as close as the Vikings would get as Brody Marks and Drew Slade allowed just one Lawrence hit over the final 2.2 innings.
Brian Brown pitched five innings to pick up the win. Chris Shaw took the loss but did not allow an earned run.
