BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team rallied late Sunday to edge Beloit College 3-2 in the nightcap of a Midwest Conference doubleheader and complete a four-game sweep of the Buccaneers.
Lawrence (15-19, 8-8 MWC) scored twice in the seventh inning and once in the eighth to down Beloit (20-17, 6-10). The Vikings beat Beloit 5-4 in the opener and clinched a berth in the Midwest Conference Tournament in the process.
Rookie Nick Guzzo turned in a superlative pitching performance for the Vikings. He allowed six hits and one run over seven innings to get his first collegiate victory. He struck out one and walked two. Matthew Holliday got the final two outs to pick up the save.
Patrick McDonnell went 2-for-4 to pace the Vikings, who were limited to six hits. Justin Kopech allowed four hits and three runs over seven innings and took the loss for Beloit.
Beloit led 1-0 before McDonnell started the rally in the seventh with a lead-off single. Mike Brady later delivered a two-out double to score McDonnell and tie the game at 1-1. Pinch-hitter Reno Zemrak followed with a single to score Brady and give the Vikings a 2-1 edge.
Nolan Spencer walked to lead off the eighth and start another rally. After moving to second on sacrifice bunt, Holliday came through with a run-scoring single and Lawrence led 3-1.
Beloit rallied for one run in the ninth, and Holliday entered the game with the bases loaded and one out. Holliday got a strikeout and a popup to end the game.
