APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University baseball standout Kyle Duex has been chosen as the Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Duex (River Falls, Wis./River Falls), a senior, hit a career high for strikeouts as he picked up the victory in a critical MWC North Division game with Beloit College.
Duex went eight innings and struck out a career-high 11 while walking two as Lawrence posted a 5-2 victory over the Bucs. Duex, whose previous career high was eight strikeouts earlier this season in a win over Northland College, scattered 10 hits and allowed just one earned run to pick up his fifth victory of the season.
Duex's performance was part of Lawrence's four-game sweep of Beloit and helped Lawrence earn its first MWC Tournament berth since 1990.
On the season, Duex improved to 5-4 and lowered his earned run average to 4.36. Duex, who is the third Lawrence player to be named a conference player of the week this season, has struck out 49 in 66 innings. Duex is the first Lawrence pitcher to be honored since Atley Gay in the 2012 season.
Lawrence opens Midwest Conference Tournament play Friday morning against the South Division winner (either Grinnell College or Monmouth College) on Friday morning at Westwood Park in De Pere, Wis.
