WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Lawrence University baseball team dropped a nonconference doubleheader to Hope College on Saturday.
Hope won the opener 14-7 and edged the Vikings 9-8 in nine innings in the nightcap.
In the second game, the teams traded the lead before Hope won it with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Jacob Charon went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs for the Vikings (1-4). Patrick McDonnell, Nolan Spencer, Rudy Mueller-Schrader, Spenser Ross and Nick Pastrone all had two hits for Lawrence.
Joey Merucci and Trace Slancik both had three hits for Hope (3-0).
Lawrence led 3-0 after scoring three times in the third, including two on Clayton Agler's single. Hope scored four times in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back.
The Vikings tied it in the fourth on Pastrone's run-scoring single and then added three more in the fifth for a 7-4 lead. McDonnell had a run-scoring triple, Ross picked up a run-scoring single and Charon added a run-scoring double in the fifth.
Hope cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth and took an 8-7 lead with two more in the sixth. The Vikings tied it in the top of the seventh on Charon's RBI single to force extra innings.
Merucci delivered an RBI triple in the ninth to give Hope the victory.
CJ Otteman picked up the win with three innings of relief, and Nick Guzzo took the loss.
In the opener, Hope used a five-run first and a five-run fifth to take control.
