RIPON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team pulled off a dramatic win in the nightcap Saturday to secure a Midwest Conference doubleheader split with Ripon College at Francis Field.
Lawrence won the second game 5-4 after Ripon rallied late to win the opener 5-3.
In the second game, Lawrence led 4-3 when Rudy Mueller-Schrader belted his first homer of the season in the top of the ninth to give the Vikings a 5-3 advantage.
Ripon then loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on a single, an error and a walk. A groundout scored a run to cut the lead to 5-4, and an intentional walk loaded the bases again.
Relief pitcher Nick Guzzo then got Jacob Pankratz to fly out, and Guzzo struck out Nick Terrell looking to end the game.
Mike Brady worked 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to get the victory, striking out three and walking two. Guzzo got all three outs in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Lawrence (5-21, 2-12 MWC) trailed 2-0 when the Vikings scored four times in the sixth. Spencer's single and error put two runners on, and Rosenberg followed with a two-run single to tie the game. After Patrick McDonnell walked, Clayton Agler smacked a two-run single to give Lawrence a 4-2 advantage.
Kade Lancour made the start and took the loss for Ripon (20-14, 8-6).
In the opener, Lawrence grabbed a 3-1 lead with three runs in the top of the eighth. After Ethan Jones reached on an error, Spencer doubled to score Jones and tie the game at 1-1. Spenser Ross then singled, and McDonnell's two-out double scored two more for a 3-1 edge.
Three walks and Terrell's triple did the damage in the bottom of the eighth as Ripon rallied for the 5-3 lead.
Spencer went 2-for-3 with a run scored and one driven in, and McDonnell finished with a pair of RBI. Chris Shaw made the start and tossed three scoreless innings, and Agler took the loss in relief.
