APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team dropped a pair of Midwest Conference games to Ripon College on Sunday at Whiting Field.
Lawrence lost the opener 16-3, and Ripon broke open a close game in the late innings to take the nightcap 11-1.
In the second game, Lawrence led 1-0 when the Vikings scored in the second. Mike Brady picked up a one-out single and went to second after a throwing error on pitcher Brice Swick. Colin Wieska followed with a single to score Brady. Wieska went 2-for-3 to pace the Vikings.
Swick was outstanding the rest of the game as he allowed just three hits after that in a complete game. He struck out 15 and didn't walk a batter. Lawrence starter Brad Olson also was outstanding over six innings. He allowed six hits, struck out three and walked three.
Lawrence (5-23, 2-14 MWC) kept that 1-0 edge into the sixth when Ripon's Nick Taranto hit a two-run homer to put the Red Hawks ahead to stay. Ripon then added four runs in the seventh and five more in the ninth.
In the opener, Ripon (22-14, 10-6) scored four times in the third to take a 4-1 lead. The Red Hawks pushed the lead to 6-3 before breaking the game open with eight runs in the seventh.
Chris Huettner made the start for Ripon and allowed three runs over six innings to get the win. Abraham Martinez took the loss in relief for Lawrence.
