NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Lawrence University football team rallied from a 20-point deficit to take the lead Saturday at Laird Stadium, but Carleton College put together a big fourth quarter to pull away for a 44-23 nonconference victory.
Quarterback Christian Zaytoun completed 30-of-49 passes for 305 yards and five touchdowns to pace Carleton (1-1). Mack Journell caught 14 passes for 149 yards and three scores for the Knights.
Lawrence quarterback D'Andre Weaver was 24-of-48 passing for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Jacob Sullivan caught eight passes for 71 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings (1-1), and Chris Shaw had five catches for 75 yards and a score.
Lawrence running back Wasonu Allen carried 10 times for 81 yards, and he caught seven passes for 30 yards. Linebacker Wyatt Lee had another big game for the Lawrence defense as he recorded a game-best 17 tackles, and Sheldon Garmon added 10 stops for the Vikings.
Carleton built a 20-0 lead before the Vikings surged back late in the first half. The Vikings put together an 11-play, 63-yard drive in less than two minutes, and Weaver capped it with a 16-yard scoring pass to Shaw to trim the lead to 20-7 with 59 seconds left in the second quarter.
Jaylan Rodriguez then intercepted Zaytoun on the next play from scrimmage and returned the ball to the Carleton 27-yard line. Weaver hit Shaw with an 18-yard completion on third down to give the Vikings first-and-goal at the Carleton nine. Weaver found Jacob Sullivan on a nine-yard scoring pass on the next play to cut the margin to 20-14 at the half.
Lawrence then took the lead on the opening drive of the third quarter. The Vikings moved 59 yards in six plays for a touchdown and a 21-20 advantage. Weaver connected with Tanner Morris for a 21-yard scoring strike to put the Vikings ahead.
Lawrence then tacked on a safety on the next play from scrimmage. Carleton took over on its own seven-yard line after the kickoff, but the Knights fumbled on the opening play of the drive. The ball ended up in the end zone, and Zaytoun covered it for a safety to give Lawrence a 23-21 lead.
Carleton came back on its next drive and moved 67 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. Zaytoun hit Journell on a 12-yard scoring pass to give Carleton a 27-23 lead. The Knights struck again early in the fourth quarter when Zaytoun hit Emanual Williams on an 18-yard scoring pass for a 34-23 lead.
The Knights added a field goal for a 37-23 lead, Ryan McGregor capped the scoring when he returned a Weaver interception 62 yards for a touchdown.
Lawrence has a bye next week and returns to action when it travels to Lake Forest College on Sept. 22.
