APPLETON, Wis. -- Hayden Nelson and DeAndre Wright did all the damage on offense Saturday and the Monmouth College football team used a dominating defense to carve out a 49-0 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
Nelson tossed seven touchdown passes as he completed 17-of-28 passes for 197 yards for the Scots (3-1). Wright ran 23 times for 171 yards to pace Monmouth's ground game, and he caught four passes for 28 yards and a touchdown. Jacolby Maxwell finished with seven catches for 115 yards and four touchdowns.
The Scots allowed just 108 yards of total offense to Lawrence (1-3).
Lawrence quarterback D'Andre Weaver was limited to 7-of-20 passing for 63 yards. Chris Shaw was the top target for the Vikings as he caught four passes for 46 yards. Lawrence sophomore quarterback Billy Wallisch saw the first extensive action of his career and completed 2-of-6 passes for 14 yards, and ran eight times for 12 yards.
A bright spot on the Lawrence defense was sophomore linebacker Wyatt Lee, who had a career-high 22 tackles, including 1.0 tackles for loss. Lawrence safety Tyler Kujawa posted his first interception of the season, and Jordan Holmes and Dante Reese finished with seven tackles apiece.
Nelson tossed touchdown passes to Wright and Maxwell in the first quarter, and the Scots then scored on three consecutive possessions in the second quarter to pull away. Maxwell caught a pair of touchdown passes in that stretch and Triston Gibson caught the other.
Monmouth completed the scoring with a pair of Maxwell touchdowns in the third quarter.
