APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University football team fell behind in the second quarter Saturday, and St. Norbert College pulled away in the third quarter en route to a 46-0 Midwest Conference victory on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
Lawrence allowed 18 second-quarter points as St. Norbert recorded a pair of safeties and two touchdowns to grab an 18-0 lead at the half. The Green Knights added a trio of third-quarter touchdowns to pull away.
Sophomore linebacker Wyatt Lee, the nation's leading tackler, posted a career-high 23 stops for the Vikings (1-6, 0-3 MWC North). Lee, who had 22 tackles earlier this season against Monmouth College, also recorded a tackle for loss and forced a fumble.
Rookie defensive back Jaylan Rodriguez picked up a career-high 12 tackles and recovered a fumble for the Vikings. Defensive back AJ Wansley also hit double digits with 10 tackles, and he recovered a fumble for Lawrence.
St. Norbert's Matt Galanopoulos scored three touchdowns, and quarterback Drew Rhodes tossed a pair of touchdown passes. Rhodes finished 8-for-15 passing for 98 yards, and he ran 18 times for 102 yards.
Lawrence played a spirited first quarter, and the defense stopped St. Norbert (6-1, 3-0) on its first three possessions. On the Vikings' first possession of the second quarter, a Lawrence fumble deep in its own territory put the Vikings with their backs to the goal line. The Green Knights then tackled quarterback D'Andre Weaver in the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 lead.
St. Norbert scored on the ensuing possession to go up 9-0, and a fumbled snap on a Lawrence punt later in the quarter caused another safety, and the Green Knights led 11-0. St. Norbert pulled away with the help of great field position as all but two of its scoring drives started in Lawrence territory.
Lawrence's deepest penetration of the game started after a blocked field goal by the Vikings. Wansley picked up his first career block as he burst through to block Spenser Thompson-Meyers' 19-yard field goal attempt. Wansley recovered the block at the Lawrence 35-yard line. The Vikings moved the ball to the St. Norbert 32 before turning the ball over on downs.
Lawrence returns to action on Oct. 27 when the Vikings host Beloit College.
