DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The University of Dubuque men's basketball team held off Lawrence University on Monday and posted an 80-75 nonconference victory at the Daytona Beach Shootout at the ICI Center.
Dubuque led by as many as nine points in the second half, and Lawrence closed to within one point with 2:26 left but could not retake the lead.
Abhishek Venkatesh came off the bench to lead Lawrence (5-4) with 19 points and hit 7-of-12 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Jeremy Stephani hit three three-pointers on his way to 12 points, and he pulled down a team-best seven rebounds for the Vikings.
TJ Lake and Jamaree Atwater provided the bulk of the offense for Dubuque (6-4). Lake scored a game-high 31 points, and Atwater added 19 points and seven rebounds.
Lawrence led 47-44 after a Stephani three-pointer with 14:17 left in the game, but Dubuque went on a 15-4 run, capped by Peter Ragan's layup with 9:07 remaining, to take a 59-51 lead.
The teams traded baskets, and Dubuque took its largest lead of the game at 65-56 with 4:45 remaining. Peterson then buried a three-pointer, and Venkatesh followed with another triple to cut the lead to 65-62 with 3:59 left.
After a free throw from Fisher, Atwater countered with a tip-in to put Dubuque up 67-63. Lawrence closed to 67-66 after Mason Materna drilled a three-pointer with 2:26 left.
Dubuque then scored the next five points before Fisher's three-point play cut the lead to 72-69 with 1:52 remaining. The Vikings then put Dubuque on the line, and the Spartans converted three of their next six from the line and led 76-71 with 30 seconds left.
Venkatesh countered with a pair of free throws to trim the lead back to 76-73, but the teams then traded turnovers. Lawrence was looking for a stop defensively, but Marcus McDaniel's layup with seven seconds remaining sealed the win for Dubuque.
Lawrence wraps up its trip to Florida with a game against Oglethorpe University on Wednesday.
