SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team pulled away in the final five minutes Saturday to post a 74-62 win over UW-Superior at the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic.
Four Vikings scored in double figures in the game at Mertz Mortorelli Gymasium. Abhishek Venkatesh paced Lawrence (1-1) with 15 points as he hit 5-of-7 shots from the floor.
The victory was the first at Lawrence for new head coach Zach Filzen, who took over the Vikings in April.
Lawrence led 61-59 with 5:31 left when the Vikings scored nine of the game's next 10 points.
Layups from Sendell and Mavrakis started the run, Venkatesh followed with a jumper and Mavrakis capped the outburst with a 3-pointer to give Lawrence a 70-60 edge with 3:20 remaining.
Superior never got closer than seven points after that, and the Vikings went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final 39 seconds to seal the victory.
Lawrence shot 56.5 percent from the floor in the second half and hit on 53.2 percent of its shots for the game.
Montroy Scott paced Superior (1-1) with 18 points.
