PLYMOUTH, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team cut a 29-point deficit to four Thursday night before Lakeland University held on for an 88-81 nonconference victory at Woltzen Gymnasium.
Brad Sendell scored 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out five assists to pace Lawrence (1-2). Mason Materna added 18 points for the Vikings before fouling out. George Mavrakis had 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Vikings, and Julian DeGuzman added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Lakeland (1-0) hit 15 of its first 19 shots from the floor to race out to a 41-12 lead with 7:26 left in the opening half. The Vikings immediately started to battle back by scoring the next seven points, including five by Mavrakis, to cut the lead to 41-19.
The Vikings then put together a 13-0 outburst with Materna scoring the final seven points on a pair of layups and a 3-pointer. That cut the Lakeland lead to 43-32, and the Vikings pulled to within 49-39 at the half.
Lakeland pushed the lead back to 60-43, but the Vikings responded by scoring the next seven points, including the final five by Sendell, to but the lead to 60-50. Lawrence pulled to 68-61 on a three-point play by Materna with 10:08 left, but Lakeland stretched the lead back to 78-63.
Lawrence put together one final burst as its outscored the Muskies 11-2 over a stretch of 3:25. Sendell hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left to cap the run and cut the margin to 85-81. Don Joachim then hit three free throws in the final 25 seconds to seal the win.
Shakur Jinad went 10-for-13 from the floor on his way to a game-high 26 points for the Muskies. Garrett Duffin added 22 points for Lakeland.
