Vikings come through in the clutch for victory at Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team rallied in the second half Saturday and went on to a 71-64 Midwest Conference victory over Beloit College at Flood Arena.

The Vikings hit a number of clutch shots in the final minutes and then sealed the win at the foul line.

Brad Sendell came off the bench to lead Lawrence (5-4, 3-1 MWC) with 17 points, and he went 13-of-16 from the foul line. Bryce Denham added 14 points, four rebounds and three steals, and Quinn Fisher had 13 points, three rebounds and three steals. Mason Materna picked up 11 points, four rebounds and three steals for the Vikings, who shot 51.2 percent from the floor.

Andrew Walters had a double-double for Beloit (5-4, 3-1) with 15 points and 22 rebounds.

Beloit built its biggest lead of the game at 47-40 with 13:34 left in the second half. Lawrence scored the game's next seven points, four by George Mavrakis, as the Vikings tied the game at 47-47.

After a layup from Walters, Fisher buried a 3-pointer to put the Vikings up 50-49. The Bucs tied the game at 52-52, and Lawrence answered with a Denham 3-pointer with 6:32 remaining to take the lead for good.

Lawrence expanded its lead to 58-53 on Mavrakis' 3-pointer, and Materna's layup put the Vikings up 60-55 with 4:39 remaining. After trading missed shots, Walters' free throw cut the margin to 60-56 with 2:43 left.

The Vikings then sealed the game at the foul line. The Vikings hit six free throws in a row and led 66-60 with 41 seconds left before Dan Babb'sjumper cut the lead to four. After one free throw by Denham, Beloit got a layup from Walters to tream the lead to 67-64 with 15 seconds left.

Lawrence then went 4-for-4 from the line in the last 11 seconds to secure the win. The Vikings went 11-for-12 from the stripe over the final 2:21 and finished 21-for-30 for the game.
