MONMOUTH, Ill. -- Lawrence University's Brad Sendell scored a career-high 31 points on Saturday to lead the Vikings to a 78-74 Midwest Conference victory over Monmouth College at Glennie Gymnasium.
Sendell, whose previous career high was 28 points earlier this season, hit 8-of-14 shots from the floor, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range. He also went 9-for-11 from the foul line and added four rebounds and four assists.
Will Carius paced Monmouth (9-10, 7-5) with a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds. The 6-foot-7 Carius was just 5-of-16 from the floor. D.J. Swift led the Scots with 20 points and five assists.
The game was tight throughout, and Lawrence led by as many as eight points in the first half before settling for a 34-30 lead at the break.
The teams traded the lead multiple times before Sendell took over midway through the second half as he scored 20 consective points for the Vikings. Sendell hit a 3-pointer and then picked up a layup to give Lawrence a 44-41 lead.
Sendell then hit four consecutive 3-pointers to stretch Lawrence's lead to 56-50 with 8:07 remaining. After a Sendell free throw, the Scots were whistled for a personal foul and a technical foul. Sendell made the first two free throws, and Mavrakis tacked on two more to give Lawrence a 61-50 lead with 6:09 left.
That was all part of a 14-0 Lawrence run that turned a 50-47 deficit into the 61-50 Vikings' advantage.
The Scots quickly rattled off eight straight points to trim the lead to 61-58, but Sendell answered with another 3-pointer for the Vikings for a 64-58 lead with 4:20 remaining. A pair of Julian DeGuzman free throws and a 3-pointer from Denham completed an 8-0 Lawrence run and gave the Vikings a 69-58 edge.
Monmouth wasn't done yet as the Scots trimmed the lead back to 71-68 on Swift's jumper with 33 seconds left. Monmouth was forced to foul, and the Vikings made 7-of-8 from the foul line to seal the victory. Monmouth picked up a bench technical with five seconds left to help clinch the win for Lawrence.
