Lawrence comeback falls short at Ripon

RIPON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team fell behind early Saturday at Ripon College, and the Red Hawks held off a late challenge to record an 84-73 Midwest Conference win at Weiske Gymnasium.

Ripon bolted to 22-point lead in the first half, but Lawrence managed to close the margin to 10 points late before time ran out on the Vikings.

Brad Sendell paced Lawrence with 22 points and went 4-for-7 on 3-pointers. George Mavrakis was great off the bench again for Lawrence (10-11, 7-7 MWC) and scored 18 points in 20 minutes. Mavrakis went 6-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the foul line, and he collected a game-high seven rebounds.

Mason Materna and Quinn Fisher added 13 points apiece for the Vikings, and Bryce Denham picked up four assists.

Trent Jones led Ripon (12-9, 8-6) with 22 points, and Cal Schultz added 17 points and six rebounds.

Ripon pulled out to a 10-point lead less than six minutes into the game, and the Red Hawks 41-19 with four minutes left in the first half. Ripon led 43-26 at the break.

Ripon was ahead 65-43 when the Vikings began chipping away at the lead. Lawrence scored eight consecutive points, the final four on free throws by Sendell, to trim the lead to 65-51.

Ripon built the lead back to 18 when the Vikings put on another scoring burst. Lawrence went on 15-7 run, capped by three consecutive 3-pointers by Materna, Fisher and Sendell, to cut the margin to 77-67 with 1:30 left.

That's as close as the Vikings would get as Ripon made 7-of-10 free throws in the final minute to secure the win.
