Balanced attack leads Lawrence past Rams

APPLETON, Wis. -- Five Lawrence University men's basketball players scored in double figures Saturday as the Vikings topped Cornell College 86-75 at Alexander Gymnasium.

Brad Sendell paced the Vikings with 19 points, and Bryce Denham scored 18 points and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. Senior George Mavrakis, playing in his final home game, added 14 points for the Vikings.

Quinn Fisher chipped in 11 points and collected a game-high seven assists for the Vikings (11-12, 8-8 MWC), and Mason Materna scored 12 points.

Jordan Magnani and Cooper Kabela scored 20 points apiece to lead Cornell (6-17, 4-12).

Lawrence pulled out to a double-digit lead in the first half and then kept the Rams at arm's length for the rest of the game. Lawrence went on an 11-4 run in the first half, capped by Materna's layup, to grab a 35-25 lead with 4:43 left in the first half.

The Rams closed to 42-38 at the half and got as close as 49-46 before the Vikings pulled away. Fisher hit a 3-pointer, followed with a layup and Denham added a layup as the Vikings scored seven consecutive points to take a 56-46 lead.

The Vikings were up 73-62 after a pair of Materna free throws with 5:18 left when Cornell scored five straight points to close the margin to six. Mavrakis squashed the rally with a 3-pointer, and Cornell never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
