Vikings go cold down the stretch against Lake Forest

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team went cold in a criticial stretch Wednesday, and it cost the Vikings in an 83-73 Midwest Conference loss to Lake Forest College at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lawrence was down by just three points with seven minutes left, but Lake Forest pulled out to a double-digit lead as the Vikings hit just one of their next seven shots from the floor over the next six minutes.

Brad Sendell paced Lawrence (7-7, 3-4 MWC) with 26 points and was one of four Vikings in double figures. Sendell went 10-for-16 from the floor, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.

Brandon Danowski added 14 points for Lawrence, and Mason Materna had 11 points and seven rebounds. Bryce Denham picked up 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Vikings.

Sean Espinosa led Lake Forest (8-6, 5-2) with 23 points, and Tashon Brown had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Lawrence led early in the second half, and the game's 10th and final tie came on Sam Husting's 3-pointer to make the score 42-42. Lake Forest pushed its lead to nine at 63-54, but the Vikings battled back.

Materna made a 3-pointer and Denham added a free throw to trim the lead to 65-62 with 7:00 left. Lawrence then missed a pair of 3-pointers on its next two possessions, and Lake Forest scored the game's next four points to grab a 69-62 edge.

Denham hit a pair of free throws and Sendell made a 3-pointer, sandwiched around an Espinosa jumper, to cut the lead back to 71-67. The Vikings then missed three consecutive 3-pointers as Lake Forest pushed the lead to 77-67 with 1:33 left.

After Lawrence's Troy Mikaelian hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 77-70, Espinosa got a fastbreak layup and the Vikings got no closer than eight points after that.
