Nowak, Schlesinger take titles at Lawrence Open

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University fencers Jakub Nowak and Nathan Schlesinger took titles for the Vikings at Sunday's Lawrence Open at the Buchanan Kiewit Wellness Center.

Nowak won the title in mixed epee, and Schlesinger grabbed first in mixed foil. Lawrence also had six other top-10 finishers.

Nowak went 5-0 in the pool competition and then won four direct elimination matches to take the crown. Nowak defeated Margherita Guzzi Vincenti of the Ataba Fencing Club 15-14 in the title match.

Lawrence's Maria Boulandier didn't win a match during epee pool play but came back to win three elimination matches to reach the semifinals and tie for third place. Lawrence's Vinzenz Mayer took seventh in epee and the Vikings' Cameron Maas was eighth.

Schlesinger and teammate Natalie Hagopian went 1-2 in mixed foil and Jack Calkwood finished fifth.

Schlesinger went 4-1 in pool competition and then won four elimination matches to take the title. Schlesinger beat Hagopian 15-3 in the title match. Hagopian was 3-2 in pool competition and then knocked off Calkwood in the quarterfinals. Calkwood was 6-0 in his pool.

In mixed sabre, Joe Davis went 4-0 in pool competition, and Allison Kim was 5-0 in her pool. Davis won a pair of elimination bouts before losing to Dexter Wilde of the RedStar Fencing Club in the semifinals. Davis finished tied for third, and Kim went on to finish ninth.
