Schlesinger takes individual title to pace Vikings at Lawrence Open

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University fencing standout Nathan Schlesinger won the mixed sabre title and took second in mixed foil on Sunday to lead the Vikings at the Lawrence Open at the Buchanan Kiewit Wellness Center.

Schlesinger topped Georgios Kepertis of the Northwestern University club team 15-13 in the gold medal bout. Schlesinger won three bouts to reach the championship round after posting a 4-1 record during the pool competition. Schlesinger also competed in mixed foil and placed second. Schlesinger won three bouts before dropping a tight 15-13 decision to Jonathan Liu of the Boston Fencing Club in the gold medal bout.

Jakub Nowak and Cameron Maas finished second and third, respectively, in mixed epee. Nowak and Maas both went 4-0 in the pool competition and both won two bouts before meeting each other in the semifinals. Nowak defeated his teammate 15-11 before falling to Margherita Guzzi Vincenti of the Ataba Fencing Club 15-13 in the gold medal bout. Nowak also grabbed fifth place in mixed foil.

Other top finishers for the Lawrence men were Vinzenz Mayer (sixth, epee), Noah Bradley (ninth, epee), Alex Loundy (sixth, foil) and Jack Calkwood (ninth, sabre).

The women were led by Allison Kim and Lexi Praxl, who tied for third in mixed sabre. Kim posted a 5-0 record during the pool competition, and Praxl went 3-2. Kim downed Aaron Cook of the Northwest Indiana Fencing Club 15-12 before falling to Schlesinger in the semfinals. Praxl won two bouts, including a 15-11 win over James Altschul of the Libertyville Vernon Hills Thundercats, before falling to Kepertis in the semifinals.

Bea Gee grabbed 10th place in mixed foil, and Ariana Calderon-Zavala was 10th in mixed sabre.
