COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With the women leading the way, Lawrence University posted a combined finish of sixth on Sunday at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships at French Field House.
The Lawrence women finished fifth with 600 points, and the men took 11th with 470 points. Lawrence's combined team score of 1,070 was good for sixth place. Ohio State won the title with 1,575 points.
The top finishers for the Lawrence women was the sabre contingent, which placed fifth. Lawrence posted a 5-2 win over Oberlin before losing 5-2 to Michigan. Lawrence then topped Michigan State 5-2 and downed Purdue 5-4 in the fifth-place match.
Women's foil took seventh place and started its day with a 5-1 win over Michigan State. After a 5-0 loss to Northwestern, the Vikings fell 5-3 to Cleveland State. Lawrence then toppled Purdue 5-1 for seventh.
Women's epee lost 5-3 to Wayne State in its opening match and finished ninth.
Men's epee posted the top finish of the day by taking third. The Vikings started with a 5-0 win over Case Western Reserve and followed that with a 5-3 win over Northwestern. After a 5-3 loss to Wayne State, the Vikings topped Michigan 5-2 for third place.
Men's foil finished fifth and started with a 5-1 win over Wayne State. After a 5-1 loss to Northwestern, the Vikings rebounded to top Purdue 5-4 and then defeated Detroit Mercy 5-4 for fifth place.
