Nowak takes title in epee to lead Vikings at Lawrence Open

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University fencer Jakub Nowak won the title in mixed epee Sunday to lead the Vikings at the Lawrence Open at the Buchanan Kiewit Wellness Center.

Nowak went 5-0 in the pool competition and then won a pair of bouts to reach the championship bout. He defeated Nicholas Oberly of the Center for Blade Arts 15-6. Lawrence dominated the epee as Cameron Maas and Vinzenz Mayer tied for third.

Lawrence rookie Bettina Coker finished second in mixed foil. She started the day by going 3-2 in the pool competition. Coker then won three consecutive bouts to reach the championship bout. Coker then fell to Ed Kaihatsu of the Fencing Center of Chicago 15-10. Nowak also competed in foil and finished fifth.

Lawrence had two fencers in mixed sabre with Allison Kim finishing fifth and Lexi Praxl taking sixth.
