Lawrence fencers post five dual victories at Detroit Mercy

Lawrence fencers won five duals at the Detroit Mercy Invitational.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Lawrence University women's fencing team won three dual meets Sunday, and the Lawrence men won twice at the Detroit Mercy Invitational at Calihan Hall.

The Lawrence women notched wins over Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy and the club team from Ohio University. The Lawrence men topped Detroit Mercy and Ohio University.

The Lawrence women knocked off Cleveland State 14-13 as the Vikings dominated sabre and epee by winning six bouts in each. The Vikings topped Detroit Mercy 18-8 and won six bouts in foil, sabre and epee. The Vikings downed Oakland University 21-0.

The Lawrence women lost 17-10 to Wayne State, dropped a 15-9 decision to Ohio State and were edged 14-13 by the club team from Michigan.

The Lawrence men picked up their first win of the day by taking down the hosts from Detroit Mercy 18-8. Epee was the key for the Vikings as Lawrence went 8-1 against the Titans. Lawrence toppled Oakland 17-6 and epee again posted an 8-1 mark. 

Lawrence lost 18-9 to Michigan, fell 19-8 to Wayne State and lost 20-7 to Cleveland State.
