APPLETON, Wis. -- Top-ranked St. Norbert College held off Lawrence University 3-2 Friday night in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
The Vikings cut St. Norbert's lead to a goal with 1:28 remaining and then nearly scored again in the final seconds.
Lane King had a goal and an assist and Nick Felan also scored for Lawrence (3-6-0, 2-3-0 NCHA). Goaltender Evan Cline stopped 31 shots for the Vikings, and T.J. Black made 15 saves to pick up the win for St. Norbert (8-0-1, 5-0-0).
King gave Lawrence the lead when he scored on the power play off assists from Austin Frank and Zach Satalino just 5:44 into the opening period. St. Norbert evened the score at 1-1 on Riley Christensen's goal with just 1:27 left in the first.
The teams went scoreless in the second, but the Vikings spent most of the period on the penalty kill as Lawrence was whistled for four penalties in the second, including a five-minute major. Lawrence penalty killers held St. Norbert's impressive power play to 0-for-7. The Vikings went 2-for-5 on the man-advantage.
St. Norbert finally grabbed the lead early in the third period when Timmy Nicksic scored at the 4:32 mark. The Green Knights pushed the advantage to 3-1 on William Yates' goal at the 13:52 mark.
The Vikings had an extra attacker on the ice when St. Norbert's Luke Davison was sent off for cross checking with 1:33 left. The Vikings scored on the power play five seconds later when Felan found the back of the net off assists from Matt Montemurro and King.
Lawrence put Cline back in net and was able to pull him again with 31 seconds remaining. Felan nearly tied it when his shot with 17 seconds left hit the crossbar and deflected away.
