APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University jumped out a big early lead Friday at the Appleton Family Ice Center and then held off No. 15 St. Scholastica 4-3 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game.
Lawrence's victory snapped St. Scholastica's 10-game win streak, and it was the Vikings' second win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Vikings got goals from four different players, including three special teams tallies, and Greg Procopio was superb in net. Procopio finished with a season-high 39 saves to earn his first victory of the season.
The Vikings then made it 2-0 just before the end of the first period. The Saints (13-6-1, 7-5-1) were on the power play when Daniel Gysi dug the puck off the boards and found Matt Beranek for a breakaway. Beranek scored his first short-handed goal of the season with 1:50 left in the first.
Lawrence stretched the lead with the help of a pair of power-play goals in the second. St. Scholastica's Mark Whiteley was whistled for a five-minute major at the 11:57 mark, and Lawrence cashed in twice on that power play.
St. Scholastica cut the lead to 4-1 on Seth Chumley's goal with just 34 seconds left in the second period, and things got tight in the third.
The Vikings took a pair of penalties in midway through the third, and St. Scholastica converted both into goals. David Ross scored at the 10:07 mark to trim the lead to 4-2, and Nolan Ross scored at the 12:04 mark to make it 4-3.
Lawrence recovered nicely from that point and kept the Saints off the board the rest of the way. St. Scholastica pulled goaltender Zane Steeves for the final 1:35 for an extra attacker, but couldn't get the equalizer.
Forbes Ploszaj made the start in goal and allowed four goals while making 15 saves in the first two periods. Steeves stopped 11 shots in the final period.
Lawrence hosts Northland College on Saturday afternoon.
