Koepplinger's OT goal lifts Lawrence past Thunderbirds

Lawrence's Josh Koepplinger scored in overtime to give the Vikings a 2-1 win over the Soo Thunderbirds.

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University's Josh Koepplinger scored with 42 seconds left in overtime Saturday to give the Vikings a 2-1 exhibition victory over the Soo Thunderbirds at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Koepplinger scored the game-winner off assists from a pair of rookies, Charles Stewart and Brandon Halvorsen, after peppering the Thunderbirds all night. Lawrence fired 60 shots at the Thunderbirds, a junior A team that plays in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

After trailing 1-0, Lawrence got a second-period goal from Daniel Gysi to tie the game. Halvorsen and another rookie, Taylor Urch, collected assists on Gysi's goal. 

Lawrence was unable to win the game in regulation despite firing 28 shots on goal in the third period. William Anderson stopped 58 shots for the Thunderbirds.

Lawrence goaltenders Evan Cline and Greg Procopio combined to make 20 saves for the Vikings.
