Vikings capture victory at Finlandia

Matt Beranek's second-period goal proved to be the game-winner in Lawrence's 3-1 victory at Finlandia.

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University scored late in the second period Saturday to take the lead for good and went on to a 3-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Finlandia University at the Houghton County Arena.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the second period, Lawrence captain Matt Beranek scored off assists from Tomas Vesely and Taylor Urch to put the Vikings up 2-1. The goal came just 43 seconds after Finlandia had tied the game.

The game was scoreless throughout most of the third period, and Finlandia pulled goaltender Marcus Gloss with 48 seconds remaining. The Vikings sealed the victory when Jake Drinkard fired the puck past a Finlandia defenseman for an empty-net goal with 35 seconds left.

After a scoreless first period, Lawrence (2-8-0, 1-5-0 NCHA) took the lead on Cole Essig's first career goal just 3:27 into the second. Bryce Mitzel tied it for the Lions at the 15:13 mark of the second.

Evan Cline was superb in net for the Vikings as he stopped 36 shots. Gloss made 26 saves for the Lions (3-7-1, 1-4-1).
