APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University hockey team allowed three third-period goals Saturday as UW-River Falls pulled away for a 5-1 nonconference victory over the Vikings at the Appleton Ice Center.
The Falcons scored late in the second period to take the lead and scored midway through the third to take the lead for good and salvage a split of the weekend series. Lawrence won the series opener 3-0 on Friday night.
Vincent Dekumbis scored for the Vikings (4-9-0), and Eddie Matsushima had a goal and an assist for River Falls (5-4-3). Goaltender Evan Cline made 23 saves for Lawrence, and Joe Marcouiller stopped 24 shots for the Falcons.
Matsushima got the scoring started after teammate Blake Anderson picked up a major penalty for boarding. Matsushima's short-handed goal at the 11:49 mark of the first put the Falcons up 1-0. Lawrence fought back on the same power play and tied it just 1:18 later.
The second period was scoreless until Lawrence's Jake Drinkard was whistled for tripping. Austin Miller scored on the ensuing power play to give River Falls a 2-1 lead with 2:01 left in the second.
The score stayed that way until Mike Sauer scored at the 8:57 to give the Falcons a 3-1 advantage. The Falcons added two goals in the final 3:26 to seal the victory.
