STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University hockey team gave top-ranked UW-Stevens Point all it wanted for two-and-a-half periods Tuesday night before the Pointers pulled away for a 4-1 nonconference win at Willett Arena.
Stevens Point was holding a 2-1 advantage when the game finally swung the Pointers' way. After a Lawrence tripping penalty at the 7:39 mark of the third, the Pointers were on the power play for the seventh time in the game.
The Vikings(4-10-0) forced a turnover at their own blue line, and Josh Koepplinger had a breakaway against goaltender Eli Billing. Billing made the save as Koepplinger cut across the net and tried to backhand the puck into the net.
The Pointers (13-0-2) then cashed in on the power less than 30 seconds later as Brandon McReynolds scored to give Stevens Point a 3-1 lead. Stevens Point went 1-for-8 on the power play. Lawrence finished 0-for-2 on the man-advantage.
Stevens Point added a late goal to complete the scoring.
The Pointers took a 2-0 lead with a pair of first-period goals, but Lawrence battled back early in the second. Matt Beranek's unassisted goal at the 2:05 mark of the second cut the lead in half. The score stayed that way until midway through the third.
Lawrence goaltender Evan Cline stopped 39 shots for the Vikings. Two Stevens Point goaltenders combined to make nine saves.
