Vikings lose OT heartbreaker at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Lawrence University rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period Saturday to force overtime, but the Vikings lost a 5-4 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association heartbreaker at Lake Forest College.

Lawrence trailed 4-2 entering the third period but cut that deficit in half when Matt Meininger scored off a pass from Vincent Dekumbis at the 8:52 mark. 

The Vikings were still down 4-3 when Lake Forest's Kyle Cote was sent off for hooking at the 12:47 mark. Lawrence converted on the ensuing power play as Dekumbis lit the lamp off assists from Maxim Plekhov and Daniel Gysi at 13:58 to tie the game at 4-4. Both teams finished 1-for-4 on the power play.

The game went to overtime, but Lake Forest ended it quickly as Austin Aksoy scored just 27 seconds into the extra period to win it.

Lake Forest jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Vikings clawed back into it late in the opening period. Rookie James Scott scored a short-handed goal off a pass from Evan Ketner with just 35 seconds left in the first to trim the margin to 3-1.

Jordan Cooper then scored at the 12:01 mark of the second off passes from Ketner and Gysi to cut the lead to 3-2. Aksoy added a goal late in the second to push the margin back to 4-2.

Boyd DiClemente made 22 saves to get the win for Lake Forest (9-2-1, 6-1-0 NCHA). Brian Tallieu came on in relief less than five minutes into the game and finished with 26 saves for the Vikings (3-8-1, 2-5-1).
