APPLETON, Wis. -- The Grinnell College men's soccer team scored three goals in the first half Sunday, including one with just 15 seconds remaining, on its way to recording a 3-1 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
Grinnell (6-8-1, 4-3-0 MWC) got on the board in the 11th minute when Lawrence goalkeeper Julien Riviere made a save on one shot but the ball caromed off a Lawrence defender and trickled back into the net.
The Pioneers made it 2-0 on Jasper Yang's goal in the 27th minute and then picked up a critical goal in the final seconds of the half. Lawrence was whistled for a foul outside the top of the penalty box with less than 20 seconds remaining, and the official stopped play to allow the Pioneers an opportunity to take the kick. Carlos Piedrasanta converted on the free kick for a 3-0 lead at the half.
Yuta Hayashi got Lawrence on the board at the 65:44 mark when he took a pass from Nicholas Jatta and beat Grinnell goalkeeper Jared Cloutier to trim the lead to 3-1. The Vikings had several other quality chances in the second half but were unable to draw any closer.
Riviere stopped eight shots for the Vikings (1-12-1, 0-6-1), and a pair of Grinnell goalkeepers combined for three saves.
