Grinnell wins shootout with Vikings

GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Grinnell College men's soccer team scored a pair of late goals Sunday to pull away for a 7-3 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University at Springer Field.

Lawrence had trimmed Grinnell's lead to 5-3, but the Pioneers got goals from Keegan Kaas and Sam Naik in a stretch of 2:31 to secure the win.

Will Nichols scored twice for the Vikings and had an assists, and Suguaru Yoshitake had a goal and an assist.

Grinnell scored in the 22nd minute to take the lead, but Yoshitake tied it for the Vikings. Yoshitake's goal at 27:37 off assists from Brendan Vellenga and Nichols knotted the score at 1-1.

Grinnell then scored the next three goals to grab a 4-1 lead. Nichols countered for Lawrence off a pass from Vellenga to cut the margin to 4-2 at the 76:58 mark. 

Grinnell scored less than three minutes later to push the lead to 5-3, but Nichols scored again off a pass from Yoshitake the 80-minute mark to trim the lead to 5-3. Grinnell then scored at 82:00 and 84:31 to seal the win.

Hunter Lanton stopped 15 shots for the Vikings, and two Grinnell goalkeepers combined to make just one save.
