Hutchinson takes third in 200 freestyle to pace Vikings on second day of MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Lawrence University swimmer Elise Riggle led the way for the women on Saturday as she took second in the 400-yard individual medley at the Midwest Conference Championships at Osgood Pool.

Riggle was the runner-up in the 400 IM in a time of 4:45.90, and Grinnell College's Maria Venneri took the top spot in 4:39.21. Riggle's finish was among a host of top-five finishes on the day for the Vikings.

Erin Lengel grabbed third in the 100 butterfly in 59.94, and Emmi Zheng was third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.89. Eryn Blagg raced to fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:00.37, and Foley Van Lieshout was ffith in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.35.

Lawrence also had two top-three finishes in the relays. The 200 medley relay team of Van Lieshout, Zheng, Blagg and Lengel took third in 1:52.61. The 800 freestyle relay team of Emei Thompson, Riggle, Bridget Duero and Mandy Marsh was third in 8:15.80.

The Lawrence women are in third place in the team standings with 376 points, and Grinnell is first with 686.

On the men's side, rookie Anton Hutchinson had the top finish of the day for the Vikings. He took third in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.37. Tom Goldberg grabbed fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 58.84 seconds.

The 800 freestyle relay team of Hutchinson, Travis Charlow, Jordan Spalding and Charlie Phillips raced to third place in 7:17.48. The 200 medley relay team of Charlow, Goldberg, Max Stahl and Akio Yamamoto was fifth in 1:38.11.

Lawrence is in fourth place with 254 points, and Grinnell leads with 620.
