Hutchinson takes title in 1,650 freestyle to cap MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Lawrence University freshman Anton Hutchinson grabbed the title in the 1,650-yard freestyle Sunday to lead the Vikings on the final day of the Midwest Conference Championships at Osgood Pool.

Hutchinson swam to the first conference title of his career in 16:30.12 to edge Lake Forest College's Max Rowland, who finished second in 16:34.77. Lawrence's Charlie Phillips grabbed fifth place in 17:07.45, and he took sixth in the 200 butterfly in 2:04.90.

This was the first individual title for a Lawrence men's swimmer since Peter Brengel won the 100 and 200 backstroke at the 2010 MWC Championships.

The Lawrence men finished fourth in the team standings with 388 points. Grinnell College took the title with 928 points.

Hutchinson was part of the 400 freestyle relay team that finished fourth in 3:13.78 as he teamed with Tom Goldberg, Akio Yamamoto and Max Stahl. Stahl also swam to fifth place in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.83, and teammate Liam Wulfman was eighth in 2:03.19. Goldberg also posted an eighth place in the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.63.

The Lawrence women placed third in the team standings with 564.5 points, and Grinnell was first with 954.5.

Emmi Zheng turned in the top performance of the day for the Vikings as she took second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.62. Illinois College's Hannah Marks took the title in 2:27.49, and Lawrence's Rosie Bauer came in sixth in 2:41.05.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Eryn Blagg, Bridget Duero, Mandy Marsh and Erin Lengel grabbed third place in 3:40.38.

Lengel also capped a great weekend by taking fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:17.73, and teammate Sarah Schweickart was sixth in 2:29.46. Elise Riggle grabbed fifth in the 1,650 freestyle in 18:38.99, and Emei Thompson was eighth in 19:12.24.

Foley Van Lieshout took sixth in the 200 backstroke in 2:17.45, and Blagg grabbed sixth in the 100 freestyle in 55.12 seconds.
