APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University men's tennis standout Aidan Delgado has been named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week after going unbeaten in a pair of dual matches.
Delgado (Torrevieja, Spain), a sophomore, collected the award after posting a 4-0 record as Lawrence split a pair of matches. This is Delgado's first MWC Player of the Week award in his career, and the first since the Vikings won the honor twice in the 2016 season.
Injury and illness moved Delgado from his normal position at No. 3 singles up to the No. 1 spot for the Vikings' match with Elmhurst College. Delgado came through as he teamed with Cade Francour for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles and then Delgado won in straight sets at No. 1 singles. The Vikings went on to beat Elmhurst 8-1.
Delgado scored two of Lawrence's points in a 6-3 loss to Saint Mary's (Minn.) University later in the week. He teamed with Jason Park for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles and then won a thrilling 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (12-10) decision at No. 2 singles.
Delgado improved his season singles record to 5-6 and is now 6-6 in doubles.
Lawrence returns to action Friday night when the Vikings take on Marian University at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.
