Lawrence tops Saint Mary's in season opener

Connor Maloney was a winner at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Vikings.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's tennis team opened the 2020 season with a 6-3 nonconference victory over Saint Mary's (Minn.) University on Friday at the Green Bay Tennis Center.

Lawrence (1-0) swept the three doubles matches and split the singles matches with the Cardinals (2-2).

The No. 1 doubles team of Connor Maloney and Cade Francour and the No. 2 team of Evan Oriel and Matt Chan both posted 8-7 victories. Aidan Delgado and Cam Strawn were 8-3 winners at No. 3.

Maloney posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Robbie Sobczak at No. 1 to lead the singles matches. Delgagdo rebounded from dropping the first set 7-5 to win 6-0 in the second set and take the super-tiebreaker 10-6. Strawn grabbed a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 6 to complete Lawrence's singles wins.
