Kortenhof cruises to victory in 5K at MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Lawrence University track and field star Joe Kortenhof cruised away from the field Friday to take the title in the 5,000 meters at the Midwest Conference Championships.

Running at the Bear Athletic Center, Kortenhof rolled to victory in 14:53.13 to win by more than 30 seconds. Aaron Davidson of Cornell College was second in 15:23.79. It was the first conference track title for Kortenhof, who won the MWC cross country crown in the fall.

Lawrence's Aaron Arthur finished seventh in 16:10.50.

Lawrence also grabbed a pair of top-five finishes in the relays.

The 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Will Nichols, Zach Allen, Ethan Simmons and Mik Patel grabbed fourth place in 3:40.21. The 4x200 team of Allen, Simmons, Nichols and Cameron Wicks raced to fifth place in 1:35.45.

Nichols also qualified for the finals of the 60 meters with a time of 7.24 seconds, and Tyler Antoine made the finals of the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.04 seconds.

The Vikings are in fifth place in the team standings with 21 points.

On the women's side, Lawrence picked up a seventh-place finish in the 4x200 relay as the team of Emily Hoeft, Eden Sorensen, Mikaela Hintz and Emily Sugiyama raced to a time of 1:51.35.

Lawrence is in ninth place with two points.

The competition wraps up on Saturday.
