APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team used power and pitching on Saturday to sweep a nonconference doubleheader from Finlandia University at Whiting Field.
Lawrence took the opener 9-5 and won the nightcap 3-1.
Madeline MacLean went the distance in the circle to pick up the win. She struck out three and walked one.
Lawrence (9-7), winners of four straight, took the lead with three runs in the second with the help of two Finlandia errors. Looker started the rally with a one-out single, and an error helped Sofie Pedersen reach. Marisa Thackston followed with a two-run double to tie it, and she later came around to score on an error to put the Vikings up 3-2.
A hit and two errors helped the Vikings stretch the lead to 4-2 in the third before Looker blasted a three-run homer to give Lawrence a 7-2 edge.
The Vikings tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to help secure the win.
In the nightcap, the Vikings got a nice pitching performance from rookie Emilia Jackson. She went the distance, allowed five hits, struck out six and walked five.
Sam Belletini went 2-for-3 to pace the Vikings, who jumped Finlandia (16-11) with a pair of runs in the first inning.
Amanda Karnatz started the inning with a walk and stole second. After Rheya Upadhyaya singled to put runners at the corners, the Vikings executed a double steal with Karnatz scoring. Karnatz finished with five stolen bases in the doubleheader. Angemi followed with a run-scoring single and the Vikings led 2-0.
Finlandia cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth as Jayleen Bonilla delivered a run-scoring single. The Lions got a runner in scoring position in the sixth, but Jackson got a pop up and a ground out to escape the game.
Lawrence added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Belletini singled to start the inning, and pinch runner Sophie Carter later scored on Pedersen's sacrifice fly.
A walk and an error gave Finlandia another chance in the seventh. With the tying runs on base with one out, Jackson got a pop up and a strikeout to end the game.
