Lawrence picks up doubleheader split with Bucs

BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team bounced back from a tough loss in the opener Sunday to pick up a Midwest Conference doubleheader split at Beloit College.

Beloit won the opener 2-1 in 12 innings, and Lawrence rolled to a 9-1 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, the score was tied 1-1 after three innings and both teams missed out on scoring chances before Beloit cashed in in the 12th.

Beloit's Emily Malarski led off the 12th with a single and finished 3-for-6 in the opener. Malarski moved to second on a sacrifice and went to third on a passed ball. She then scored on Emalie Thern's single to give the Bucs the victory.

Alyssa Boltik went all 12 innings, allowed six hits, struck out five and walked four to get the win. Madeline MacLean also went the distance for Lawrence (10-8, 1-1 MWC). She gave up 12 hits, struck out six and walked two.

In the nightcap, the Vikings pounded out 14 hits with Kori Looker leading the way. Looker went 3-for-5 with a double, scored two runs and drove in a pair. Rheya Upadhyaya went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for Lawrence.

Lawrence led 3-1 and started to break the game open in fourth inning. Amanda Karnatz got hit with a pitch to start the inning, and Upadhyaya followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Looker belted a two-run double for a 5-1 edge. MacLean followed with a sacrifice fly, and the Vikings led 6-1.

The Vikings pushed the lead to 9-1 with three more runs in the seventh. Lawrence loaded the bases with singles from Marisa Thackston and Emilia Jackson and Karnatz was hit by a pitch. Upadhyaya responded with a bases-clearing double to give the Vikings an eight-run edge.

Jackson, who went 2-for-4, went the distance to get the win. She allowed six hits, struck out eight and walked three. Shania Johnson lasted four innings and took the loss for Beloit (3-17, 1-3).
