APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team posted a Midwest Conference doubleheader split on Saturday with Grinnell College at Whiting Field.
The Pioneers took the opener 9-1 and Lawrence won the nightcap 3-2.
In the second game, Lawrence got a nice pitching performance from Madeline MacLean, who went the distance to pick up her fourth win of the season. She allowed 10 hits, struck out two and didn't walk a batter and worked out of a couple of late jams.
The game was tied 1-1 when MacLean led off the second with an infield single and Thackston followed with a single. After a pair of outs and a double steal, Urich smacked a two-run single to put Lawrence up 3-1.
Grinnell got a run back in the third to trim the lead to 3-2 and threatened again in the fifth and seventh. Grinnell had runners at first and second with one out in the fifth when pitcher Maggie Remus lined into a double play to end the inning. Lydia Stariha led off the seventh with a double for the Pioneers, but MacLean got a pair of fly outs and a comebacker to end the game.
In the opener, Kayla Morrisey went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple and three runs scored to pace Grinnell (5-11, 3-1). Melissa Anderson allowed six hits over seven innings to get the win. She struck out two and walked four but managed to strand 11 Lawrence runners.
The Pioneers led 4-0 when Lawrence loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, but Anderson got a ground out to end the inning. Lawrence got on the board with an unearned run in the fourth and had the bases loaded with one out. Anderson got a pop up and a ground out to end the inning.
MacLean went 2-for-4 to pace the Vikings and had Lawrence's lone hit over the final three innings.
Emilia Jackson went the distance and took the loss. Jackson allowed 13 hits, struck out seven and walked two.
