APPLETON, Wis. -- Three Lawrence University softball players and the team were honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for academic achievement.
Players Sam Belletini (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township), Amanda Karnatz (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and Sofie Pedersen (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) all won the NFCA Scholar-Athlete Award. The Vikings also captured the Easton/NFCA Academic Team award.
Belletini, a catcher who graduated in June with a degree in biology, posted a 3.85 grade point average. Belletini also earned All-Midwest Conference and All-Great Lakes Region honors during her career.
Karnatz, who completed her rookie season this past spring, had a 3.62 GPA and is majoring in music education and math. Karnatz hit .405 last season with a school-record 15 doubles and scored a team-high 35 runs while driving in 15. She earned all-conference and all-region honors in 2017.
Pedersen, who is a junior outfielder, posted a 3.50 GPA and is majoring in anthropology. Pedersen hit .252 while starting in the outfield.
The Vikings posted a GPA of 3.25 to win the team award. To be eligible for the award, a team needed a minimum 3.0 GPA.
