RIPON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team grabbed a win in the opener Wednesday, and Ripon College rallied to win the nightcap to split a Midwest Conference softball doubleheader at Tracy Field.
Lawrence won game one 6-2, and Ripon took the second game 3-2.
In the opener, Lawrence (7-13, 1-3 MWC) seized control of the game with six runs in the fifth inning to grab a 6-1 lead. The big blow in the inning was Maria Reiter's two-run triple, and Amanda Karnatz and Madeline MacLean both picked up run-scoring singles in the inning sandwiched around Lexi Angemi's sacrifice fly.
Reiter went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, two RBI and a run scored, and Karnatz was 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored a run. Rookie catcher Ceara Larson also tripled for the Vikings.
MacLean went the distance and allowed eight hits to pick up the win for Lawrence. Lexi Reetz was tagged for five runs on just three hits in 4.1 innings and took the loss.
In the nightcap, Lawrence built a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and fourth. Reiter delivered a single to score Rachel Urich in the third, and Sofie Pedersen singled to score Lexi Angemi in the fourth.
Ripon scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth and tied it at 2-2 with another unearned run in the sixth. Micaela Encarnacion's run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh lifted Ripon (9-15, 3-3) to the win.
Reetz allowed one hit over the final three innings to pick up the win. Emilia Jackson went the distance for the Vikings, gave up nine hits, one earned run, struck out two and didn't walk a batter.
