APPLETON, Wis. -- The Illinois College softball team took both games of a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Sunday at Whiting Field.
The Lady Blues won the opener 9-0 and took the nightcap 7-4.
In the first game, Mariah Hedges tossed a four-hit shutout for Illinois College (23-9, 15-3 MWC). She allowed four hits, struck out one, walked one and did not allow a runner past second base.
Catcher Lea Hall did the bulk of the damage for the Lady Blues as she went 4-for-4 with a three-run homer. Hall's homer capped a four-run fourth inning as the Lady Blues seized control of the game.
Madeline MacLean allowed 13 hits and took the loss for Lawrence (11-23, 5-13).
In the nightcap, Illinois College met every challenge by the Vikings and held on for the win. Hall went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and finished with four runs batted in.
Illinois College scored a pair of runs twice after Lawrence had posted runs in the previous half-inning, and the Lady Blues led 7-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Lexi Angemi and Pedersen led off the inning with singles, but Illinois College reliever Jess Feig struck out the next two hitters. Rachel Urich then doubled to score pinch-runner Lindsey Lucas to trim the lead to 7-4. That brought the tying run to the plate, and Karnatz laced a line drive to left that was speared on a diving catch by Jackie Reilly to end the game.
Feig worked four innings of relief and allowed seven hits and two runs to pick up the win. Emilia Jackson went the distance for the Vikings and took the loss.
