Big second inning dooms Vikings in season opener

Lawrence dropped a 13-1 decision to Montclair State in the season opener.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team fell behind early Friday and dropped a 13-1 nonconference decision to Montclair State University at the National Training Center.

Lawrence took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Montclair State scored seven times in the second to take control. The game ended after five innings.

Maria Reiter and Lexi Angemi both went 2-for-3 for the Vikings (0-1), and Reiter drove in the only run for Lawrence. The Vikings out-hit Montclair State 9-8. 

Valentina Cucci went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs with a grand slam in the second to pace Montclair State (4-3). Kiara Ruiz went four innings to get the win, and Emilia Jackson took the loss for Lawrence.
